THE BIRDS AT PARROT PLAYHOUSE These are the toy testers for Parrot Playhouse, a very hard working bunch I might add. Most of them came here as "used" birds. Although I have had many wonderful offers, these guys are not for sale.
Calvin, 38 year old Moluccan cockatoo. The old man of the house.
Caledonia, 6 yr old Moluccan cockatoo. The apple of her Daddy's eye. Turn you back on her and she will eat the remote to the TV in a flash!
Tut, 20 yr old Citron Cockatoo. Sweet beyond belief. Tut is what everyone thinks a cockatoo should be, sweet, loving, goes to anyone. BUT She can crack glass with her scream. She may be little but she can out scream the moluccans.
Carlos, approx 20 yr old goffins. Cookie, 19 yr old Blue front His nickname is Goofy. He is an exceptional Amazon, remaining Carlos doesn't need to be able to fly, sweet even during breeding season. he can jump 10 feet. Carlos thinks he is Cookie's mate.
Cookie and Carlos are both males. They have separate cages but as soon as their doors are opened they are together. They have decided they are a mating pair. They have built a nest in my couch, under my console TV, and redecorated my bird room wall.
Carrie Sue, 10 yr old Timneh Grey. Carrie Sue has a magnificent vocabulary which she never uses around strangers. She is a bit temperamental, after all she is a grey! She told the vet "Bad birds bite", then she bit him! She is definitely Mommy's girl. Here she is enjoying her favorite activity, admiring herself !
Georgie & Gracie, 4 year old black headed caiques. The clowns of the family. They are like little energizer bunnies, constantly on the go.
Maggie is a peach front conure, 3 years old now. Although she is one of the quieter conures she is constantly talking and making noises. Maggie seems to think that she is the same size as the blue & golds. She maybe the smallest bird here, but has the biggest attitude.
Chelsea, 14 yr old blue & gold macaw. Chelsea has lived with us since she was about 4 weeks old. She is very laid back and gentle. Chelsea is a truly feminine creature. She never has a feather out of place and refuses to eat foods that make her feet dirty. Chelsea is the Queen of the flock, she knows it and so do the other birds.
Rico, 6 yr old Blue &
Gold macaw. If there was a King and Queen, Rico would be the court
jester!! Rico is the exact opposite of Chelsea. Rico is very
rambunctious, loves to play, and follows me thru the house like a puppy.
Rico's tail is seldom all there,
she constantly breaks them off because of the rough and tumble way that she
plays. Leave Rico's sight and she is off and running. Think the
only way to keep her home would be duct tape. J/k
This is Chandler, 6 yr old Blue & Gold male. Chandler came to live with us in May of 2001 . Chandler is the most possessive of the 4 macaws. If it is his the other birds are not allowed to touch it. But it is perfectly ok (with him) if he plays with their stuff, because once he touches it then it becomes his stuff too. Up and coming King?
This beautiful boy is Geezer. He is a 17+ yr old Moluccan Cockatoo. Geezer was a breeder at one time. Both his mate and he plucked out all his feathers. When Geezer first came to me he had very few head feathers. I am afraid that the feathers he has now are the most that he will ever have. Years of plucking ruined the follicles, so the feathers can no longer grow. He tends to become a little aggressive during breeding season, screams more than I would like, but he is a sweetie just the same.
This is our newest addition. Seymour 7 yr old Harlequin macaw. Seymour is a hybrid macaw, the result of breeding a blue and gold with a green wing. He is one of the most unpredictable birds I have ever met. One minute he is a sweet and cuddly bundle of feathers, the next he is a feathered monster. I believe his unpredictability comes from cross breeding the 2 species. I love him dearly but would never recommend anyone to buy a hybrid from a breeder. Please don't buy a hybrid from a breeder or a pet store, this only encourages them to breed more!! If you really want a hybrid macaw then please adopt one from the many rescues out there. If you live in IL, WI or IA try one of these rescue organizations Larra or Iowa Rescue
At least half of the birds at the Playhouse have come from previous homes. From experience I can tell you that they make wonderful pets. Those that are the most bonded to me are my adoptees. So if you are considering adding a bird to your household, please consider adopting a bird in need of a new home. Whether you buy a baby or give a home to one in need please do your research first. There are lots of wonderful breeders and great rescues out there. There are also many at the other end of the scale. If you do your research first you have a much better chance of having a great relationship with your feathered child.
